Floating shelves are a look I always enjoy, it’s clean and practically seamless. I wanted to install them in our house, but I did not know where a good fit would be. After a few weeks of deliberating with LMB, we choose to put them in our bathroom to add storage, you can never have enough storage in the bathroom, and this is how they turned out.
2×1 Boards (the mounted boards to the walls).
MDF Board (for the top and bottom faces).
MDF Trim (for the front face).
8 – 75lb rated drywall anchors
Wood Glue (make sure it works with MDF)
Staples & Nails
++Beer of choice
The Tools
Level
Drill
Hammer
Stud Finder
Staple Gun
5/16 Drill Bit
++Bottle Opener
The Construction
I measured from the floor to where I wanted the top of my shelf to be (keeping in mind of the 3/4 ” thickness of the MDF top board). I Marked the line using the board I will be attaching to the wall. With a level sitting on top I drilled a pilot holes through the board and through the drywall. I removed the board and tapped the anchors in place. I wanted to ensure strength in the shelves, so I utilized two drywall anchors rated up to 75 lbs on each board. Put the board back up and drilled the screws through the board into the drywall anchor. Do this for both sides.
Next, Place the MDF top and bottom boards, check for level, and nail them down. (Ensure you measure the aft portion of the shelf and the front side of the shelf. My bathroom fans out a little bit so the front was slightly wider than the back.). Once those are installed, I put decorative trim on the front facing portion of the shelves with wood glue and small staples. The shelves are now ready to be painted.
Our water closet has a tall ceiling, so naturally this was a perfect spot for the shelves. After I figured out my plan of attack, the shelves went up in about 20 minutes, not including cutting the boards. They are sturdy and deep enough to provide a decent amount of storage. The project was very cheap, with an overall total cost just under $50.00. That is it, quick and easy. Find me on Facebook, twitter, and Instagram, let me know what you think. I LOVE this idea, we have a similar potty room all by itself and we need that storage. I was wondering, where did you get those baskets from, Tj maxx?
I will be doing this one, thanks for sharing!
I believe LMB picked those up from TJ Maxx. Good luck on your shelves, please let me know how they turn out.
Nice work on the shelves. That is an awesome place to put those. I put three in our nursery, they are handy and elegant at the same time.
Yeah I remember that one you had in the basement, I really liked the way you built it.
Hay, those look great…but they are not floating. Floating shelves do not connect to walls on the sides. Those are just really nice shelves. 🙂 Happy day to you.
